Root Canal Treatment to Help Preserve Natural Teeth

Endodontic treatment focuses on problems affecting the pulp and internal tissues of a tooth. Modern root canal techniques can help remove infection, relieve symptoms and preserve teeth that might otherwise require extraction.

Smile Collective in Ghatkopar provides root canal treatment, including selected single-sitting procedures, using modern endodontic techniques to clean, shape and seal the root canal system.

ROOT CANAL INDICATIONS

When Might Root Canal Treatment Be Needed?

Root canal treatment may be considered when the pulp or nerve inside a tooth becomes inflamed, exposed or infected.

  • Spontaneous pain or throbbing.
  • Pain while biting or chewing.
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Severe decay or injury causing an abscess or infection around the tooth.
  • Traumatic injury that exposes the nerve.

Prompt assessment is important because untreated infection can lead to increasing pain, swelling or an abscess.

ENDODONTIC CARE

Single-Sitting Root Canal Treatment

Selected root canal cases may be completed in a single sitting. The treatment involves accessing the pulp chamber, locating the canals, cleaning and shaping them, and sealing the prepared root canal system.

Whether single-sitting treatment is appropriate depends on the condition of the tooth and the clinical findings.

Root canal treatment is an endodontic procedure used to remove infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals of a diseased tooth. Infection can develop when bacteria enter the pulp because of untreated decay, a crack or trauma.

During treatment, an opening is made in the tooth and the infected pulp is removed. The root canals are cleaned and prepared before being filled and sealed with biocompatible material. The tooth is then restored with a filling, crown or other appropriate restoration.

Single-sitting root canal treatment is designed to complete the cleaning, shaping and sealing of the root canal system in one appointment when the clinical situation is suitable.

The pulp chamber is accessed and the root canals are located, thoroughly cleaned and shaped with endodontic instruments. The prepared canals are then filled with gutta-percha and sealed with appropriate dental cement.

Completing suitable cases in a single visit can reduce the risk of contamination between appointments and shorten the overall treatment process.

Before treatment, the dentist assesses the tooth and determines whether root canal therapy is appropriate. The affected area is locally numbed, and measures are taken to reduce the risk of contamination during treatment.

Once the tooth is numb, an opening is created to access the pulp chamber and root canals. Small root canal instruments are used to remove infected tissue, debris and bacteria.

After the canals are cleaned and dried, they are filled and sealed with a biocompatible root filling material such as gutta-percha. The access cavity can then be restored with tooth-coloured restorative material.

Some tenderness or sensitivity may occur for a short time after root canal treatment. Medication may be recommended where appropriate, and the dentist will provide instructions for recovery and care of the treated tooth.

A root-filled tooth often requires a crown or another strong restoration after treatment to provide additional protection and support.

Root canal re-treatment is used to clean and disinfect a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy but has not healed as expected or has developed a new infection.

Re-treatment may be needed when a canal was not identified during the original procedure, when infection persists, or when a loose crown or damaged filling allows bacteria to re-enter the tooth.

The aim of re-treatment is to remove infection from inside the tooth, clean the root canal system again and seal the tooth to help protect it from future infection.

ENDODONTICS FAQS

Common Questions About Root Canal Treatment

Find answers to common questions about root canal treatment, recovery and re-treatment.

Root canal treatment may be needed when decay, a broken tooth or trauma allows the pulp to become infected or inflamed. Possible symptoms include temperature sensitivity, swelling, drainage, odour, pain and tooth discolouration.

The tooth is numbed and an opening is made to access the root canals. Small instruments are used to remove infected pulp and prepare the canals before they are filled and sealed. The tooth is later restored with a crown or another appropriate restoration.

Some sensitivity can occur for a few days after treatment. Patients may be advised to avoid biting hard on the treated tooth until the final restoration or crown has been placed and to follow the dentist's recovery instructions.

Root canal treatment may require several visits, although selected cases can be completed in a single sitting depending on the condition of the tooth and the clinical findings.

Root canal re-treatment is performed when a previously treated tooth develops persistent or new infection. The root canal system is reopened, cleaned, disinfected and sealed again to help protect the tooth.
